If the vehicle has over 80,000 miles (or more) on it, and the transmission has never been rebuilt, it’s a good time to do it now if your have a pump leak. Nobody has x-ray vision so God only knows what the condition is of the internal components. It would be senseless to reseal it now and ultimately have to pull the transmission back out again a few months later.
However if your transmission has developed a leak from the bell housing area and it’s still low mileage, then an external reseal is just what the doctor ordered. Be sure to have the torque converter pressure tested for leaks while it’s out.
