Transmission Leaks

How bad could it be?

A transmission leak could end up being a minor repair while it could also end up being a major repair.

If it’s leaking from the front of the transmission or bell housing area, chances are you will need an external reseal. This is a major repair while most other leaks are minor.

When diagnosis a transmission leak, you have to consider wind forces and gravity. Look for the highest location that is wet as well as the wet area that is closest to the front of the vehicle. Wind will blow the fluid backwards and gravity will cause the fluid to drip downwards.

Leaks when sitting overnight?

If your transmission only seems to leak when it sits for long periods of time, it is most likely a pan gasket or an o-ring seal causing your grief. As the vehicle sits, the torque converter drains back causing the fluid level in the pan to rise, flooding the top of the pan rail.

Leaking from the vent?

If your transmission is leaking from the vent it is either over-filled, overheating, or there is an internal failure. It is important to get your vehicle inspected as soon as possible to avoid causing a catastrophic failure. One of the number one causes of transmission failure is from a low fluid level.
