Transmissions that run hot don’t last as long as transmissions that run cool. Peak temperatures of up to 220 degrees are not uncommon for a working transmission. Anything over 220 degrees would be considered over-heating. If your vehicle has a transmission temperature gauge, it is a good idea to monitor it from time to time. Especially when pulling long grades
If you are towing or hauling heavy loads an auxiliary cooler is pretty much mandatory. Transmissions get really hot under these conditions and you should do everything in your power to prevent that from happening. When choosing a transmission cooler it is important to select the right one. There are 3 types of transmission coolers. Stacked Plate, Plate & Fin, and Tube & Fin. You should use a stacked plate cooler for extreme duty applications and a Plate & Fin cooler on everything else. We do not recommend using a Tube & Fin cooler.
