Although a minor repair always sounds good, sometimes it’s not the best solution. For example if your transmission has a mechanically failing solenoid, simply replacing the solenoid should fix the problem. Unfortunately it may not last long. The most likely reason the solenoid has failed is because of fine metal contaminants that are attracted to the solenoid due to their internal magnet. The armature begins to stick which causes shifting problems. Those same contaminants are still attacking the other solenoids in your transmission as well as the new one you install. Without correcting the cause of the contaminants, you are only supplying a band-aid.
Have your vehicle checked for technical service bulletins. It’s a great way to identify common problems related to your symptoms
Even though you may think you know what is wrong with your transmission, the shop will still need to diagnose it themselves
In most instances a major repair is going to give you peace of mind that your vehicle will be reliable again. If it has other problems besides the transmission, obviously those will need to be addressed as well. Just because you spent thousands of dollars to rebuild your transmission doesn’t mean the other issues will go away on their own.
An overhaul and a rebuild are basically the same thing. This is the best option because you stick with your original transmission which is programmed to your vehicle.
Installing a used transmission is not a good idea because you don’t know what you’re getting. Your transmission was a good used transmission not too long ago.
Repair solutions are often used in minor repairs as well as major repairs. Transmission shops thrive on updating your transmission with the latest and greatest parts. If the manufacturer has upgraded some componants, it is important to update your transmission with the improved parts. In some instances, there are aftermarket and/or performance parts avaialable that far exceed the quality of the original equipment. A good rebuilder will be sure to use the best replacement parts avaialable.
